FMA: Weapon vs. bare hands? A middle-aged grappler's rude awakening

According to the linked article's last two paragraphs, in a loosely controlled experiment involving a curious middle-aged grappler, who didn't know any better, and a kid with fast reflexes and a kamagong stick in hand ...

One morning, nearly a decade ago, I challenged my fifth-grade son, Mikael Fedor, to test the arnis skills he learned in PE class. With his dark brown kamagong stick in hand, I’ll try to subdue him with my bare hands. By then, I had been practicing and teaching grappling for almost two decades, but mainly as a sport and so much less as a form of self-defense outside the mat. Unlike some of my friends who belong to the Filipino Martial Arts (FMA) community, I was neither into self-defense against weapons nor disarming.

To read how it ended in the second and last paragraph, check out the short article from February issue of The Archipelago Press here: This Arnis Hub in UP Diliman Keeps the Precolonial Sport Alive.

One-Minute Hirit 24: Pinagtataguan Kayo Ngayon ni BBM?! Eh Matagal Nang ...

Masamang precedent at ehemplo! . . Ang imahe sa thumbnail ay mula sa balita ng Philippine Daily Inquirer, "Bongbong Marcos shuns Comelec debates, cites 'preferred mode of communication with people," ni Neil Arwin Mercado, ika-14 ng Marso, 2022.)

One-Minute Hirit 20: “Secretary Larry Gadon”: Wala Na Bang Iba?!

Luke Espiritu:    • Luke Espiritu, ig...  . Mula sa https://votepilipinas.com/candidate/e... “Luke Espiritu, 47, is a lawyer, labor organizer and activist for human rights, climate justice and gender equality. He is the former national president, spokesperson and current labor organizer of the Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino as well as the former national president of the Solidarity of Unions in the Philippines for Empowerment and Reforms Federation.”

Hustisya Para Kay Jullebee Ranara!

Remember the DA mandate: “The Department is the government agency responsible for the promotion of agricultural development by providing the policy framework, public investments, and support services needed for domestic and export-oriented business enterprises. ‘The DA envisions a food-secured and resilient Philippines with empowered and prosperous farmers and fishers. As such, it shall collectively empower them and the private sector to increase agricultural productivity and profitability, taking into account sustainable, competitive, and resilient technologies and practices. Hence, its battlecry is simply: “Masaganang Ani at Mataas na Kita!” Source: Department of Agriculture official website.

Nag-start ako mag-commercials six years old, nag-start ako mag-Ang TV mga 13 to 14 years oldJM recalls.

Sa kanyang freshman year sa UP Diliman, he was already in the acting field. He chose Theater Arts as his course in college.

It took one week for JM to audition.

So noong pumunta ako doon, bahala na. Wala namang mawawala.

Never pang nangyari sa akin yun. From there, doon ako nahubog sa indie films.

Thanks, Anthropologist Mayumi Yamamoto, for the Appreciation!

I'm a modest man, but I really think that to acknowledge and appreciate in return is the courteous thing to do. So here we go: Thank you, anthropologist Mayumi Yamamoto of Japan for the mention and encouraging words from your wonderful Basil and Sunflower blog articles:

From Elmo, 3, joins youngest Americans in getting vaccinated:

. . . her generous Filipino teacher.

He is quick at getting to the point I overlook and reminds me, casually.

So, he is a good teacher.

And from Ryanair Afrikaans test: Airline drops controversial South African quiz:

The essay above was shared with my English language teacher,
a Filipino poet,
who edits my writings along with grammatical correction.
Where I wrote 'That is the ironic by-product of British imperialism'
--- my Filipino teacher said,  'American imperialism, too'.

Maraming-maraming salamat, Miho-san!

(From the Philippines to Japan!)

Third World Rising (Vol. 1, No. 1)

Back in 1991, I was one of 10 representatives of the National Capital Region in the editorial cartooning competition of that year's National Secondary Schools Press Conference held in Tacloban, Leyte. After more than two decades, here's my first and struggling attempt to resuscitate whatever's left of the cartoonist in me -- by starting a comic strip series of quick sketches and thoughts on whatever takes my fancy from the country where Manny Pacquiao threatens to run for president: ours.  (And yes, this series is entitled "Third World Rising," on a positive note...really.)

Here's my take on the "peculiar way" our president consistently begins his SONAs:

And because the image's rather small (I'll find a way to fix this), the ff. is the fictional dialogue:
