(Guam's Chantay Fejeran is awarded the gold medal in the women's 72 kg. division of the 1st Philippine-Guam Olympic Wrestling Friendship Tournament.)
It was a busy Saturday last July
20, 2013 for the Wrestling Association of the Philippines (WAP) as it hosted
the 1st Philippine-Guam Olympic Wrestling Friendship Tournament in the
morning, then the now-bimonthly Scholastic Takedown Wrestling Challenge (STWC)
in the afternoon at the National Wrestling Gym, Rizal Memorial Sports Complex,
Manila.
The international dual meet was
played in Olympic freestyle rules, and pitted six members of the Guam youth
wrestling team (ages 20 years old and below) versus a mix of youth and senior
wrestlers from the Philippine wrestling team. The champions of their respective
divisions are Margarito Angana, Jr. of Zamboanga City (FS 66 kg.), Joshua
Sapinoso of California, USA (FS 74 kg.), Elvis Julius of Baguio City (FS 84
kg.); Ma. Cristina Vergara of Pasay City (FW 63-65 kg.) and Chantay Fejeran of
Guam (GW 72 kg.)
Angana and Vergara are both
two-time Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) gold medalists. Remarkably for Angana, last
Saturday was the first time he competed in freestyle again after six years; the
wrestler has concentrated on Greco-Roman since 2008. In Greco-Roman, he is
currently the defending national and SEAG champion.
In the STWC where Yaw-Yan
Kampilan of Las Piñas won the team championship, the Guam wrestlers also joined
and won one gold courtesy of Ethan Aguigui (Men, 66 kg.) and a bronze medal
each from Kimo Barcinas (Men, 74 kg.) and Herbert Fukuda (Men, 84 kg.).
Overall, the visiting Guam youth
wrestling team bagged two gold and four bronze medals from the international
dual meet and STWC combined.

“It was a good experience for
both Philippines and Guam to hone their skills together, the results of which
are camaraderie and a healthy international exchange of knowledge and
experience between the teams,” remarks WAP president Albert Balde.
According to Guam wrestling team
manager and coach Luis Ting, they will be back here in late December with full
cadet, junior and senior teams to compete again with their Pinoy counterparts.
